Reversed DUNK

Stele in front of EDGE Tower Berlin

The artwork Reversed Dunk consists in its core of an 18m high stele in steel hollow box construction and was designed by Studio Kim/IllI for the new building of the EDGE Tower in Berlin Friedrichshain. The artwork is placed on a concrete platform in front of the building, which is used as the entrance level for the tower as well as the connecting axis of the mall to the Warschauer Brücke. In order to keep the superimposed load on the existing platform as low as possible, various construction types for the stele were investigated in advance. Even the lightest construction method found with the box girder construction required the reinforcement of the platform which was ensured by bonded carbon fiber lamellas. The four supports had to meet the requirements of thermal protection and impermeability, since warm interior spaces lie beneath the platform. The platform was welded as a rib-reinforced box girder made of sheet steel t=6mm and then completely covered with a synthetic resin-bonded slag. The object was transported from North Rhine-Westphalia to Berlin in one piece as a road-bound heavy transport and lifted into place with the help of a mobile crane during the night of 22.7.23 and bolted to the foundations set in advance.
