Umbrellas at the Tanzbrunnen in Cologne's Rheinpark

As planned, the redesigned area in Cologne’s Rheinpark surrounding the stage at the Tanzbrunnen is set to open on schedule for the current season. The historically protected complex, built for the 1971 Federal Horticultural Show by architect Frei Otto and consisting of the stage and the five formerly retractable canopies, has been modernized and expanded to meet the demands of a modern event venue well into the future. In this context, AR Ingenieure was responsible for the construction planning of the new umbrella structures as well as the shop drawing planning for the membrane surface, whose total area was expanded from the original 5 to a total of 9 umbrellas. For reasons of historic preservation, the geometry of the new canopies was modeled exactly after the original canopies. Since the new canopies were designed as fixed structures, however, the steelwork could be significantly simplified. Functions such as cable routing and drainage were relocated inside the masts to achieve a clean, uncluttered design. The fiberglass membrane ensures the structure’s high durability. The design and structural analysis were once again carried out in our usual efficient manner by calculating the overall model and designing the details based on the determined section forces in advanced software systems. We are pleased to have contributed to the successful completion of the project within the specified time and budget constraints.
