Highflyer

Highflyer

The object adapts the motif of the classic pointed paper airplane but this time folded from mirror polished stainless steel of 3 mm thickness with a height of 6 m. AR Ingenieure has supervised this task statically for the Berlin artist Peter Sandhaus.

The team of the company steelworks manufactured the object and erected it north of Frankfurt Airport in front of the new Europacenter in April. The work of art was folded from two 6x2 m sheet metal panels and joined together at the central web with a wafer-thin weld seam of 0.3 mm reinforced by bonding. In order to be able to fold the sheet so sharply, the folds had to be milled in, the residual thickness of which had to be as thick as possible from a static point of view and as thin as possible from a production point of view. In order to satisfy all aspects, the milled seams with varying thicknesses were verified by calculation.
